5 Facebook Ads Mistakes That Burn Your Budget
April 10, 2026
Facebook Ads can be one of the most cost-effective ways to reach new customers. But when done wrong, they're a money pit. Here are five mistakes we see small businesses make — and how to fix each one.
1. Boosting posts instead of running real campaigns
That “Boost Post” button is tempting, but it gives you almost no control over targeting, placement, or objectives. A proper campaign in Ads Manager lets you define exactly who sees your ad, where they see it, and what action you want them to take.
Fix: Always use Meta Ads Manager. Set a clear objective — leads, traffic, or conversions — and build your audience intentionally.
2. Targeting too broad (or too narrow)
Casting a wide net sounds smart, but showing your ad to “everyone in Kenya aged 18-65” wastes impressions on people who will never buy. Conversely, a hyper-narrow audience of 500 people drives up costs and limits delivery.
Fix: Start with a focused audience based on interests, behaviours, or lookalikes of existing customers. Test and refine from there.
3. No clear call-to-action
Your ad looks great, but what should people do after seeing it? If the answer isn't obvious in two seconds, they scroll past. Every ad needs a single, clear CTA: “Book a call,” “Shop now,” “Get a free quote.”
Fix: One ad, one message, one action. Remove anything that competes for attention.
4. Sending traffic to your homepage
Your homepage is designed for browsing. An ad is designed for action. When someone clicks your ad and lands on a generic homepage, they lose the thread. The disconnect kills conversions.
Fix: Send ad traffic to a dedicated landing page that matches the ad's promise. Same headline, same offer, same CTA.
5. Not tracking conversions
If you can't measure results, you can't improve them. Many businesses run ads without the Meta Pixel installed, so they have no idea which ads are actually generating leads or sales.
Fix: Install the Meta Pixel on your website. Set up conversion events. Let the data tell you what's working.
The bottom line
Facebook Ads work — when they're set up properly. Fix these five mistakes and you'll see better results from the same budget.
